SM MALL OF ASIA CELEBRATES THE CHINESE NEW YEAR
By: Mark Cua

Chinese New Year was one of the most celebrated days in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. In Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan Province, it is called ‘Spring Season Festival’. This is because it welcomes spring season.

Philippines is one of the nations with the most number of Chinese immigrants and overseas Chinese. It is just right next door from Hong Kong Island and the Mainland. This was one
of the Hub of immigration activity in Southeast Asia.

Chinese New Year was one of the indelible parts of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. It is also an indelible part of the Chinese people because like many nations in the Asian Region they are also agricultural in nature. Winter is a cold season and no plant life other than pine trees and temperate plants can grow. So Spring is the best season where farmers in mainland China can plant their crops, and harvest. This has been the tradition of Chinese farmers for 3 or 5 millennia now.

China is a country with four seasons which are winter, spring, summer, and fall. So this is the origin of the Chinese New Year.

SM Mall of Asia owned by one of the richest business tycoons in the Philippines made use of this opportunity as a marketing activity. Thus designed  the malls not only SM Mall of Asia with Chinese New Year. He knows that Philippines is one of the nations is Southeast Asia to have millions of Chinese in population size alone.

One of the programs made by SM Mall of Asia was the Chinese painting and Lantern contest and displayed on the SM Grounds. They sell their lanterns or either takes them home and there is a prize for the winner. Indeed it is a very good marketing activity for SM Malls to attract many shoppers. They even posted Chinese astrological animals, and their superstitious astrological Feng Shui fortune telling.

As for everyone who hadn’t seen the lanterns, you come and visit the SM Mall of Asia and see the site yourself. You will be amazed with grandeur of the dragon brought by the dragon in the entrance.
